Bariatric

Obesity is increasing at alarming rates in the U.S., with more than 25 percent of adults now considered obese (Body Mass Index greater than 30). Although preventing weight gain and obesity remains the primary public health goal, better treatment for those already obese is crucial. The most effective means currently available to induce substantial weight loss, and maintain it long-term, is bariatric surgery which is offered in the Bariatric Unit at The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The MED). This surgery could be in the form of gastric banding or gastric bypass – both of which restrict the amount of food that can be taken in. Bariatric services at The MED are supported by a comprehensive patient care team including: surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, nutritionists, nursing assistants and respiratory therapists.

Medical Directors: Drs. Atul Madan and David Tichansky.
