Pharmacy Practice Residency

One of the Nation’s Best

The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The MED) offers one of the nation’s strongest Pharmacy Practice Residency Programs accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. As a primary teaching site for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy, we provide at least partial training to over half of all medical professionals in Tennessee.

In addition to our traditional Pharmacy Residency Program, applicants may also elect to enroll in a variation of the program with an emphasis in ambulatory care. Both programs are one-year, full-time post-graduate experiences.

Program Objective and Training Emphasis

The objective of the Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is to provide year-one residents (PGY1) with training to support their professional competence in the delivery of patient-centered care in a wide variety of settings as well as in pharmacy operational services. Specific skills of focus in this program include:

  • Gaining knowledge required for skillful problem solving, as well as refining problem-solving strategies
  • Strengthening professional values
  • Advancing the growth of clinical judgment
  • Managing and improving the medication-use process
  • Providing evidence-based, patient-centric medication therapy management within interdisciplinary teams
  • Exercising leadership and practice management skills
  • Demonstrating project management skills
  • Providing medication and practice-related education and training
  • Utilizing informatics

Much of the emphasis of this 12-month (2,000 hour minimum) program is placed on advancing the growth of each resident’s clinical judgment. This process begins during professional school years, but requires further extensive practice, self-reflection and shaping of decision-making skills fostered by performance feedback and coaching. The specific program for each resident may vary in structure based upon his or her knowledge, skills and interests.

Applicant Requirements

Applicants for the Pharmacy Practice Residency should hold a Doctor of Pharmacy or Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy and should be eligible for license in the state of Tennessee no later than October. An on-site interview, academic transcripts, overview of experience/qualifications (curriculum vitae), application and three letters of reference are required.
