The objectives of the Pharmacy Practice with Emphasis in Ambulatory Care Residency at The Regional Medical Center are to develop expert knowledge and skills provision of pharmaceutical care. This residency assumes that the applicant has achieved a basic level of competence in institutional and clinical pharmacy practice. The specific program for each resident may vary in structure based upon the resident's entry level of knowledge, skill and interest. This residency is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

The Pharmacy Practice with Emphasis in Ambulatory Care Residency Program, is a 12-month (2,000 hour minimum) program composed of advanced ambulatory practice experience. Residents receive training and develop competence in ambulatory care, drug information, drug use policy development and practice management. Residents will spend 8 months in ambulatory care clinics, one month on an internal medicine team treating patients in a hospital setting one month in drug information, drug policy development and practice management and one month in one of the following elective experience:

Nutritional Support
Managed Care
Critical Care
HIV-AIDS

Obstetrics and Gynecology
Burn Intensive Care
Trauma Intensive Care

During each experience, the resident is expected to perform independently and demonstrate proficiency in pharmacy practice. Clinical staff members with practice responsibilities in these areas serve as preceptors for the training experiences. The resident is expected to participate and develop competency in the following pharmacy managed patient care clinics, under the direction of the preceptors and the attending physicians.

    Pharmacy Managed Direct Patient Care Clinics:

    • Anticoagulation Clinic:

    This clinic meets 4 half days per week and provides anticoagulation management for approximately 300 patients receiving anticoagulation therapy. Residents are responsible for patient interviews, physical assessment, therapeutic assessment, and decision-making.

    • Diabetes, Hypertension, and Hyperlipidemia Clinic:

    This clinic operates 2 half days per week. Patients are referred from Internal Medicine for aggressive treatment of diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Residents are responsible for patient interviews, physical assessment, therapeutic assessment, and decision-making...more

  • The hospital and clinic are primary teaching site for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy.
