The Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center
History

In 1980, Dr. Timothy Fabian, an international expert in trauma care and research, arrived in Memphis with the vision of creating the first trauma center in the Mid-South. Patterned after the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center, the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at The Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The MED) opened its doors in 1983, with Dr. Fabian as founder and medical director. In 2000, Dr. Fabian took over as Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery for University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and Dr. Martin Croce became medical director of the Trauma Center.

Today, the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at The MED is one of the busiest level one trauma centers in the nation, with over 4,000 admissions annually, and is a leader in orthopedics and neurosurgery.

A dedicated team of trauma staff works around-the-clock using the most advanced medical equipment and expertise. Medical breakthroughs developed here are quickly adopted nationwide as standard practice in trauma care.
