Overview
 

The Wound Center (WC) is a regional referral center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) in the Mid-south. The WC is organized as a physically and functional distinct unit within the hospital complex and is one of the five centers of excellence at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

The center serves as an outpatient clinic for the treatment of a wide range of acute chronic and non-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, failing skin grafts, traumatic wounds and outpatient burns.

The WC accepts referrals from the Divers Alert Network (DAN) for treating sport and commercial diving accident victims within the Mid-south.

The center also provides wound care and HBO services to inpatients within the hospital complex.

The center is located on the ground floor of the Jessie Turner Tower building " It is comprised of a waiting room, six exam rooms and a multiplace hyperbaric chamber that will accommodate up to twelve patients at a time. The chamber area encompasses a free standing operations console for the hyperbaric chamber and a nursing station.

The center provides intensive and continuous care utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach. A team is comprised of physicians, nurses, technicians, therapists, nutritionist, pharmacists and case management. This team approach is also utilized during patient and family education regard the proper techniques used in performing wound and burn care.

The WC is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM until 5:30 PM and is staffed with on-call personnel for complete 24 hour per day coverage. The Medical Director is Dr. Stephen King.

Accepted Indications for the Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

  • Acute Air or Gas Embolism
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
  • Acute Cyanide Poisoning
  • Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome and other Acute Traumatic Ischemias
  • Decompression sickness, "the Bends"
  • Clostridial Myonecrosis, "Gas Gangrene"
  • Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
    • Crepitant Anaerobic Celluiltis
    • Progressive Bacterial Gas Gangrene
    • Necrotizing Fascitis
    • Nnclostridial Myonecrosis
    • Fournier's Gangrene
  • Chronic Refactory Osteomyelitis
  • Radiation Necrosis
    • Osteoradionecrosis
    • Soft Tissue Radionecrosis
    • Prophylaxis for Dental Extractions Following Radiation Therapy
  • Actinomyocosis
  • Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps
  • Enhancement of healing in select Wounds
  • Recognized by all major insurance carriers.
Transcutaneous pO2 Measurements
  • Measures the oxygenation of tissues at the skin level (tissue oxygen tension)
  • Helps determine which wounds will benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • Helps determine what level of amputation will heal in a patient with comprised blood flow or compromised wound healing ( e.g., transmetatarsal vs. BKA vs. AKA)
